Paper Blossom was featured in a 2 page spread on Sunday the 30th of July 2006, in the Home Interior / Decor section. The following are extracts from the article, written by journalist Fiona Armstrong.
"Paper Trails And Tribulations"
A Victorian washhouse has been transformed into the engine room of a small, successful stationery business, while the accompanying cottage is an ideal home in a picturesque setting.
In our time-poor lives, there's gratifying nostalgia in receiving a handcrafted invitation to attend a celebration. For Fiona McCay, life is immersed in the art of reflecting the mood of an event, (weddings, birthdays, christenings) using multi-media materials- from feathers to fabrics - and a lot of skill. Prompted to launch a stationery business after guests at the own wedding admired her hand made designs, McCay's Paper Blossom has thrived since establishment in 2002, with rock stars including The Fun Loving Criminals among those opening her invitations.
McCay gets to know a bride well while working out individual desires, and is thrilled to have been asked to some of the weddings for which she's created stationery. When she and husband Simon moved to Lanark from their Portobello flat five years ago, studio space was placed at the top of the house hunting agenda. Laying eyes on their mid 19th century cottage with separate stone washhouse was a dream come true, as it accommodated practical needs and oozed charm.
"Clients love the intimate experience it offers," says McCay, who holds consultations in the walled garden, weather permitting.
A textiles graduate of the (then) Scottish College of Textiles, Galashiels, McCay adores colour and texture, tenets of both her home and work. "My parents' house was filled with colour and I soaked it in from an early age," she says.
Certainly, her old Victorian laundry is the place to go in order to set the style of a celebration from the moment the invitation drops through the door. Fun loving Criminals and fun-loving friends alike will treasure these miniature works of art.
